Suspects in assault on Amtrak crew include three juveniles now facing charges as adults

Five suspects, age 15-19, were arraigned this week for an April 16 assault on the engineer and conductor of an Amtrak Capitol Corridor passenger train passing through West Sacramento.

“The train was forced to stop by one of the suspects standing on the tracks,” said a statement from the office of Yolo County District Attorney Jeff W. Reisig. “After the train was stopped, the indictment alleges that the engineer was attacked by the suspects and struck in the head with rocks, bottles and a fire extinguisher. It also alleged that the suspects attempted to commit robbery.”

All five were indicted for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, vandalism, and other charges. They also face enhanced punishments for being involved in gang activity: Reisig’s office believes the five are members of the Broderick Boys gang in West Sacramento.

The three juveniles among the five suspects are being charged as adults.

Deputy District Attorney Jay Linden said the attack was “brutal,” and that the train’s engineer was injured and has not returned to work since the incident near the I Street Bridge.

The five defendants did not enter a plea.

The D.A.’s office has released the names of the five, including the juveniles who are being tried as adults: Daniel Bonge, 18; Austen Nunez, 17; Orlando Ramos, 15; Robert Reynolds, 16; and Pauliton Nunes, 19, who is still sought by police.
