A Lowe’s “do-it-yourself retailer” store is set to open its doors this Saturday at 6 a.m. at 2250 Lake Washington Boulevard, west of Jefferson. The company says it spent $18.5 million on the new store that includes 117,000 square feet of retail space and a 31,700 square feet garden center.

A Lowe's home improvement retail store is scheduled to open this Saturday (Jan. 12, 2008) in West Sacramento's Southport area; this photo was taken last week, as the store was receiving its final preparation. The store's future neighbors at the 'Westbridge Plazak' complex may include a Starbucks and a Rubio's southwestern style restaurant.

The store will employ 175 people, said Lowe’s.
The chain is the second-largest home improvement retailer with about 1,500 stores (87 in California). The largest retailer in the category is Home Depot, which opened a store in late 2007 near Reed Avenue and I-80. Lowe’s is a 60-year old company based in Mooresville, North Carolina. It reported $46.9 billion in earnings in 2006.
The new retail center on Lake Washington Boulevard is being developed by Lux Taylor of Sacramento’s Taylor Property Development.
A West Sacramento plannersaid it is his understanding that planned future tenants for the “Westbridge Plaza” development on Lake Washington Boulevard include a Rubio’s restaurant and a Starbucks (West Sacramento’s fourth).
Developer Lux Taylor told the News-Ledger he couldn't comment on the eight tenants he has in "final negotiations," but restaurants -- including a "large full-service restaurant and bar that features live music and is popular in Sacramento" is among them.
Many of those tenants could be in place by about May or June, he said.
The northern 17 acres of the 33-acre project is not yet planned for development. Taylor said he is seeking a tenant for that part of the project -- and that might be a department store in the category of a Mervyn's or Gottschalks.
Taylor's company also owns property at the northeast corner of Jefferson and Linden, where a Washington Mutual Bank branch is planned and other possible uses include a dental office, restaurant and retailer.
"The market in the region is really getting hurt, but the Southport sub-area is very strong because of lack of product," he said.
The new Lowe’s will join Home Depot and other major West Sacramento retailers including Ikea, WalMart and Target – all new to the city since 2006.
