Raley Field has won approval for a new outdoor entertainment venue.

The city planning commission last week granted a conditional use permit for the open-air facility that will have capacity for up to 3,500 guests on the 3rd Street side of the stadium.

Jeff Savage, representing River City Stadium Management, said the venue could be a home for acts such as George Benson, the Philharmonic, Chris Isaak or the Doobie Brothers.

The commission discussed potential noise from the site, but was essentially assured that an 11:30 p.m. curfew and city sound restrictions will take care of the problem.

“In the past, we’ve had relatively few complaints registered at concerts,” said Savage. The ballpark occasionally hosts large-capacity, amplified concerts on the playing field itself.

Several members of the community told the planning commission they were excited about the new entertainment opportunity for West Sacramento, including one resident of the Rivers subdivision north of the site.

“To us and many of my neighbors, we’re excited about being within biking, walking and maybe shuttle distance of this entertainment venue,” said Rivers resident Jeb Burton.
